VoIP vs AT&T Business Florida: Published Prices, Real Terms, and the Copper Deadline

AT&T publishes $30 per line for AT&T Phone for Business and $25 per line for AT&T Business Voice, plus taxes and fees. Mynians publishes $17.95 to $32.99 per line with a five-line minimum. But price is not the urgent part of this comparison: AT&T is retiring its copper network, and in January 2026 the FCC approved discontinuance in wire centers across eighteen states including Florida, effective 15 November 2026. Every AT&T figure below is quoted from AT&T or from a federal filing, verified 26 August 2026.

Key findings

What actually changes the decision

  • The copper clock is real and dated: AT&T targets full copper retirement by 2029; the FCC auto-granted discontinuance covering Florida wire centers on 13 January 2026, effective 15 November 2026, with a further application pending for legacy business lines from 1 June 2027
  • AT&T publishes no SLA for its small-business voice products — no uptime, no repair time, no response commitment. It does publish 99.99% with a credit schedule for Switched Ethernet, so it publishes SLAs when it chooses to
  • Some AT&T charges are AT&T’s, not the government’s: its own page says the Regulatory Cost Recovery Charge “is not a tax or charge which the government requires AT&T to collect from its customers”
  • Published support hours differ from published sales hours: AT&T lists business customer service as Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm CT, while its sales line is advertised 24/7
  • A five-line minimum on our side: below five phones we are the wrong choice, and AT&T’s bundled $15 per line rate for up to six lines is likely to beat us outright
✓ Every AT&T figure links to AT&T or an FCC filing
✓ Verified 26 August 2026
✓ No contracts • No setup fees

Business Continuity: What Each Provider Actually Publishes

Storm season is the right question to ask a phone provider in Florida. It is also the question most comparison pages answer with stories rather than specifications. Here is what each side puts in writing. AT&T’s continuity features are genuinely good, and better documented than most competitors bother to publish.

What AT&T Publishes

24-hour battery backup on Business Voice

AT&T Business Voice, launched June 2025, ships with 24-hour battery backup on its equipment. AT&T Phone for Business – Advanced publishes a 12-hour internal battery. Both are stated in AT&T’s own product briefs.

Optional automatic 4G LTE failover

Business Voice offers automatic wireless failover as an option, plus 24/7 remote monitoring with automatic notifications. If continuity is your priority, this is a real feature and you should ask for it by name.

AT&T Phone for Business is itself VoIP

In AT&T’s words, it is “voice service provided over an Internet Protocol (VoIP) digital connection.” Anyone selling you copper-versus-VoIP as the choice here is describing a decision you are not being offered.

No published SLA on the voice products

AT&T publishes no uptime, repair-time or response-time commitment for AT&T Phone for Business, AT&T Business Voice or Office@Hand. It publishes 99.99% with a full credit schedule for Switched Ethernet, so the absence here is a choice, not an oversight.

How We Handle It

Calls follow the person, not the building

If the office loses power or connectivity, the same number rings on the mobile app with your business caller ID. Nothing has to be repaired first and no truck has to roll.

Ask about continuity during onboarding

Routing rules, forwarding targets and after-hours handling are worth settling in writing before you commit. Ask any provider you are considering — including us — what they will put in the onboarding scope.

Get the support terms in writing

Ask us for our current support terms in writing before you commit, and ask AT&T for theirs. AT&T does not publish SLA terms for its small-business voice products.

Read the detail rather than take our word

What we publish on failover and redundancy, including what it does and does not cover, is here: VoIP failover and redundancy.

What we are not going to claim

No storm comparison
We previously published a Hurricane Ian copper-versus-VoIP comparison. No source supports it: the FCC’s status reports for Ian do not separate copper from VoIP, do not name carriers, and cannot support a restoration-time comparison. It has been removed.
No reliability verdict
We have no evidence that copper is more reliable than VoIP or the reverse, so we are not going to tell you either. What we can compare is what each provider commits to in writing, which is what this section does.

What Twenty Lines Costs, and What Neither of Us Can Tell You Yet

This table uses published rates only. Where AT&T does not publish a figure, it says so rather than estimating. That means the totals below are line charges, not bills — AT&T’s taxes, fees and installation terms are not public, so a true three-year total cannot be built from the outside by anyone, including us.

Cost Category AT&T Business Voice (20 lines) Mynians Essential (20 lines)
Published rate per line $25/mo $17.95/mo
Monthly line charge, 20 lines $500/mo $359/mo
Year 1 line charge $6,000 $4,308
Rate in Year 2 Not publicly published $359/mo — we publish no increase after Year 1
Taxes, fees and surcharges “Plus taxes and fees.” Amounts not publicly published No hidden regulatory fees or surcharges
Installation AT&T advertises free installation on AT&T Phone for Business; terms vary by product $0
Contract Phone for Business is advertised month-to-month; Office@Hand states early termination fees apply, amount not published None — 30 days’ notice
Published SLA None published for SMB voice We do not publish an uptime percentage; we put in writing what happens during an outage and how failover is set up
Smallest account No minimum published; bundled $15/line covers up to 6 lines 5-line minimum
Three-year line charge only $18,000 $12,924
DIFFERENCE ON LINE CHARGES OVER THREE YEARS $5,076

The AT&T charges worth asking about by name

Regulatory Cost Recovery Charge
AT&T’s own page states this “is not a tax or charge which the government requires AT&T to collect from its customers.” The amount is not published. Ask what it will be on your account.
Administrative Fee
An AT&T-imposed charge to “defray certain expenses AT&T incurs,” including interconnection charges and cell site rents and maintenance. Amount not published.
Property Tax Allotment
For business customers AT&T applies a surcharge “of between $.20 and $.45 (currently $.31)” per assigned number, and states such surcharges “are not mandated charges to the customer.” This is the one fee AT&T does put a number on.
Early termination on Office@Hand
AT&T’s Office@Hand page footnote says “Early termination fees apply.” The amount is not on that page, and the Business Services Agreement defers it to a separate tariff or service guide. Ask for the figure in writing before you sign.
SIP trunking pricing
Quote required. AT&T publishes no price for IP Flexible Reach; the product page directs you to sales.
What we will not do
We previously published dollar amounts for AT&T setup fees, maintenance contracts, equipment leases and termination penalties. None of those figures were sourced and all have been removed. Named fees, yes. Invented prices, no.

Four Things Florida Businesses Believe About AT&T Lines That Are Worth Checking

These are not accusations about AT&T. Three of the four come straight from AT&T’s own filings and public statements, and on one of them AT&T is closer to right than the industry usually admits. Each carries its source so you can check it yourself.

📅

“Nothing is changing — my copper lines will always be there”

Why people believe it: copper business lines have worked the same way for decades, and nobody has sent a letter saying otherwise.

✓ WHAT THE FILINGS SAY:

AT&T told its December 2024 investor meeting it intends to retire its copper network by 2029, and has said it spends roughly $6 billion a year maintaining it while only about 5% of customers still use copper voice.

In practice it is already moving. AT&T filed on 1 December 2025 to discontinue copper-based service in wire centers covering roughly 90,000 customers across eighteen states including Florida. The FCC auto-granted it on 13 January 2026, with discontinuance effective 15 November 2026. A separate application to discontinue “AT&T Business Individual Access Line Service” — legacy TDM business lines — is pending as FCC WC Docket No. 26-120, proposing discontinuance on or after 1 June 2027.

What this does not mean: we cannot tell you whether your specific wire center is in scope, and neither can anyone else outside AT&T. What it does mean is that “do nothing” has a deadline attached to it now, and it is worth asking AT&T directly which category your lines fall into.

🔀

“This is a choice between copper and VoIP”

Why people believe it: comparison pages — including an earlier version of this one — have framed it that way for years.

✓ THE REALITY:

AT&T Phone for Business is VoIP. AT&T’s own page describes it as “voice service provided over an Internet Protocol (VoIP) digital connection.” AT&T Phone for Business – Advanced is marketed explicitly as “an enterprise-grade, cloud-based replacement for what is commonly called, ‘plain old telephone service,’ or POTS.”

So if you are talking to AT&T about replacing copper today, you are already choosing between two VoIP services. The question is not the technology. It is who supports it, what they commit to in writing, and what it costs in year two.

One more that is worth knowing: AT&T Office@Hand is, per RingCentral’s own August 2025 announcement, “powered by the RingCentral RingEX™ platform.” AT&T’s product page does not mention RingCentral. If you are also shortlisting RingCentral or Spectrum Business Connect, all three run on the same underlying platform sold through three different relationships — different billing, support and packaging, same engine.

🔌

“VoIP is useless the moment the internet goes down”

Why people believe it: it was largely true fifteen years ago, and it is still the most common objection we hear.

✓ THE REALITY, FAIRLY STATED:

Any hosted phone service depends on connectivity, ours included. What differs is what happens next. On our service, calls route to the mobile app with your business caller ID, so the number keeps ringing on a phone in someone’s pocket while the office connection is down.

And AT&T does this too, which is worth saying plainly. AT&T Business Voice publishes 24-hour battery backup and an optional automatic 4G LTE wireless failover, and AT&T Phone for Business – Advanced publishes a 12-hour internal battery. Those are real features, documented in AT&T’s own product briefs, and better specified than most providers bother to publish. If continuity is your main concern, ask both of us to show you the failover path.

🕰️

“We have been with AT&T for twenty years — why change now?”

Why people believe it: nothing has broken badly enough to force the question, and switching sounds like work.

✓ WHAT IS ACTUALLY DIFFERENT NOW:

AT&T has said it itself. An AT&T executive vice president, describing the legacy network: “Our legacy services are no longer meeting our customer needs for speed, reliability or always-on connectivity.” That is not a competitor’s characterisation. It is the vendor’s own assessment of the product you are still on.

The Florida numbers show the same direction of travel. The Florida Public Service Commission recorded 763,866 traditional TDM wireline lines statewide as of December 2023, of which 484,345 were business lines, and reported AT&T’s Florida wireline lines declining by over 56,000 — 16.9% — in that year alone.

One thing to know about recourse: the FPSC’s own report states that since the 2011 Regulatory Reform Act it “no longer retains jurisdiction over telecommunications consumer complaints and holds no data on quality of service.” That is about the regulator’s remit, not about AT&T’s performance — but it does mean the contract you sign is the protection you have, which is why the published-terms comparison above matters more than it used to.

Not sure which category your lines fall into?

That is the first thing worth establishing, and it is a short conversation. Tell us how many lines you have and how your calls need to work, and we will map it out — including telling you if staying put is the right answer for now.

VoIP Mynians Transparent Pricing: No Contracts, No Hidden Fees

Our rates are published rather than quoted, and they do not change after year one. Below each plan is an honest comparison against AT&T’s published per-line rates of $25 for Business Voice and $30 for Phone for Business. On one plan we are clearly cheaper. On another we are roughly level. On the third we cost more, and we have said so.

Where We Serve in Florida

Mynians serves businesses across Florida from our base in Winter Garden. We do not operate branch offices in the cities below — we serve those markets. Contact Mynians to confirm available implementation and support options for your location. AT&T Florida, by contrast, is the state’s incumbent local exchange carrier with infrastructure everywhere; we are not going to pretend otherwise, and if physical presence is your deciding factor, that is a point in their column.

Primary Service Areas

What Being Local Actually Buys You

Not latency — anyone claiming a millisecond advantage without a measurement is guessing, and we are not going to. Here is the part that is real:

The same team, every time
You reach Mynians directly rather than a tiered call centre. Ask us for our current support terms in writing before you commit, and ask AT&T for theirs.
Parallel build before cutover
We build and test the new system in parallel, confirm the schedule with you before anything moves, then cut over once it is verified. AT&T publishes no go-live timeline for its business voice products, so ask them for one in writing if you are comparing.
Implementation and support options
Contact Mynians to confirm available implementation and support options for your location. We do not operate an office in the cities we serve and are not claiming one.
What we publish about continuity
What we publish on call routing and continuity is here: failover and redundancy. Ask any provider you are comparing to show you the same in writing.

Industry-Specific VoIP Features for Florida Businesses

Healthcare, legal and real estate practices tend to need the same three things: call handling that matches how the business actually runs, records they can rely on, and a compliance story that survives an audit. These are the features we configure most often for each. Ask us to confirm any specific integration before you assume it — the lists below are representative, not exhaustive.

Healthcare

Healthcare Practices

Medical offices, dental practices, and healthcare providers need call handling that supports their HIPAA program — controlled voicemail access, recording controls, secure fax — which AT&T’s small-business voice products don’t describe. VoIP Mynians delivers:

  • Healthcare call handling: encrypted call paths, with BAA availability confirmed in writing
  • On-call routing for after-hours calls
  • After-hours routing rules built to your call flow
  • Priority emergency call routing for on-call providers
  • EHR workflow requirements reviewed with you
Worth confirming first: HIPAA compliance and the Business Associate Agreement sit on our Enterprise plan. Read the detail on healthcare VoIP configurations in Florida before you commit either way.

Legal

Law Firms

Legal practices often need confidential communication, detailed call logging, and professional call handling. Those needs should be compared feature by feature rather than assumed from a basic voice plan:

  • Encrypted call paths between your phones and the platform
  • Detailed call records for billing and documentation
  • Hunt groups route calls to available attorneys
  • Professional auto-attendant with practice area routing
  • Practice-management integration can be scoped per firm
Worth asking about: call recording with storage is included from Professional upward. If your matter files depend on it, confirm retention requirements with us before you choose a plan.

Real Estate

Real Estate Agencies

Real estate professionals often need mobile flexibility and lead visibility beyond a desk-phone-only workflow:

  • Mobile app lets agents take office calls while showing properties
  • Call reporting shows which numbers ring and who answered
  • Ring groups route buyer/seller calls to available agents
  • After-hours voicemail-to-text prevents missed leads
  • CRM screen-pop can be scoped for supported CRMs
The practical test: can an agent take an office call from a listing without giving out a mobile number? That is the mobile app doing its job, and it is included on every plan.

Where Every AT&T Figure on This Page Comes From

Each AT&T statement above is quoted from AT&T’s own pages, AT&T’s product briefs, or a federal filing, and was verified on 26 August 2026. Prices and terms change; AT&T’s pages carry their own “rates subject to change” language. Check them before you decide.

Published prices
$30/line standalone and $15/line bundled with AT&T Business Fiber for up to six lines — AT&T Phone for Business. $25/line voice and $60/line utility — AT&T Business Voice. All “plus taxes and fees.”
Fees AT&T describes as its own
The Regulatory Cost Recovery Charge, Administrative Fee and business Property Tax Allotment language is quoted from AT&T’s Additional Charges page.
Copper retirement
The 2029 target was stated at AT&T’s 3 December 2024 investor meeting. The January 2026 FCC auto-grant covering eighteen states including Florida, effective 15 November 2026, and WC Docket No. 26-120 for legacy business lines are federal filings of public record.
Office@Hand and RingCentral
“Powered by the RingCentral RingEX™ platform” is RingCentral’s own wording in its 4 August 2025 announcement of the partnership.
Florida line counts and regulator remit
From the Florida Public Service Commission’s 2024 competition report.
Our own figures
Mynians rates and terms are published in full on our pricing page. Where this page shows a total, it is arithmetic on published per-line rates and excludes taxes on both sides.

What we removed from this page, and why

Customer stories
This page previously carried five named customer testimonials. We could not establish them as real, attributable and authorised, so they are gone rather than anonymised. Fabricated proof does not become honest by removing the name.
A three-year savings figure
A to-the-dollar three-year savings total was published here. It could not be built from any AT&T figure. AT&T publishes no twenty-line rate and no dollar amount for its administrative fee, regulatory recovery charge, termination fee or equipment. The table above shows only what can be calculated.
A hurricane comparison
Removed in full. The FCC’s Hurricane Ian status reports do not separate copper from VoIP and do not name carriers.
“No local Florida presence”
Removed because it is wrong. AT&T Florida is BellSouth Telecommunications, the state’s incumbent local exchange carrier, and the FPSC has named AT&T Florida’s largest residential access line provider for five consecutive years.
Support and latency numbers
Response times, hold times and millisecond latency comparisons removed on both sides. Neither we nor AT&T publishes a measured figure, so nobody should be quoting one.
Named fee amounts
Setup fees, maintenance contracts, equipment leases and termination penalties previously carried dollar ranges. The fees are real and named above; the amounts were not sourced and have been removed.
