VoIP Failover and Redundancy: What Happens to Your Calls When the Office Goes Dark

VoIP failover and redundancy keeps your cloud-hosted phone system reachable when your building loses power or internet. The question is where your calls should go — and that is a set of rules Mynians configures and tests with you before storm season, not a marketing promise. This page explains what failover can and cannot do, honestly.

  • Calls rerouted to mobile apps, cell phones or another office by rules you approve
  • Status greetings for closures, set once and switched on when needed
  • Tested with you in May, not during the warning
  • No uptime percentage published — we put in writing what happens during an outage

Three Failure Scenarios

The Three Layers of VoIP Failover and Redundancy

Each layer answers a different failure. We set all three up with you.

Layer 01

The office loses internet or power

Most common: a cut cable, a router failure, a storm outage

Desk phones in the building stop registering, but your numbers and your auto attendant still live on the hosted platform. Inbound calls keep being answered by the system. By the rules you approve, they ring the mobile app on staff phones, forward to cell phones, or route to another location — in whatever order you choose.

Layer 02

Staff can’t reach the building

Evacuations, flooding, road closures

The mobile app and browser calling carry the business number, extensions and voicemail wherever staff are. Queues and ring groups can include mobile users, so the front desk keeps working from a kitchen table.

Layer 03

You need to tell callers what is happening

Closures, delayed openings, emergency-only hours

A status greeting recorded in advance can be switched on in minutes, with options that still route urgent calls to a person. When the office is back, the normal rules reset.

Clear Expectations

What VoIP Failover Cannot Do

VoIP failover and redundancy reduces single-site risk, but it does not make every endpoint independent of power, internet or cellular service.

Know the limits

Be honest with yourself about these

  • Desk phones need power and internet. If the building is dark, the desk phones are dark; the mobile app is the failover, not the handset.
  • Cell service can be degraded in a major storm. Failover to mobile depends on the mobile network where your staff are.
  • Rules only work if they are set. A system with no failover rules rings the office and goes to voicemail. That is why we configure and test yours during onboarding.
  • No provider can promise a number. We do not publish an uptime percentage. We put in writing what happens during an outage and who to call.
Our commitment

What we do promise

  • Failover rules configured with you before go-live and tested before storm season
  • A status greeting ready to switch on
  • Voicemail to email so messages reach people wherever they are
  • A named escalation path for service-affecting outages, agreed in writing before you sign
Before You Need It

How We Set Up VoIP Failover

We map the call path, configure it, test it with you, and check the network dependency behind it.

01

Decide where calls should go

During the call-flow map we ask: if the office is offline, who answers, from where, and in what order? Which lines matter most — appointments, dispatch, billing?

02

Configure the rules

Ring the mobile app when desk phones are unreachable, forward the main number to another site, route after-hours calls to an on-call rotation, and pre-record the status greeting.

03

Test it with you

We simulate the office going offline and watch the calls arrive where they should. Before storm season we run it again.

04

Check the network side

If your office depends on a single internet connection, we tell you plainly and can quote a backup connection or router failover as separate network work.

Common Questions

VoIP Failover Questions

These VoIP failover and redundancy questions cover what happens during storms, how E911 fits in, and when backup internet is worth adding.

01
What happens during a hurricane?

The hosted platform keeps running when your office loses power or internet. Calls are rerouted to mobile apps, cell phones or another site by the rules set during onboarding, and a status greeting can be switched on for closures.

02
Do you guarantee uptime?

We do not publish an uptime percentage or an SLA figure. We put in writing what happens during an outage, how failover is configured for your account, and who to call.

03
Will E911 work from the mobile app?

Every number and device is registered to an address for E911, and you keep dispatchable-location details current. We walk you through the E911 disclosure at setup, including how mobile and remote users should handle emergency calls. The FCC’s VoIP and 911 guidance explains the federal requirements in more detail.

04
Can we get a backup internet connection?

Yes, as separate network work. We can quote a secondary connection or router failover as part of the Call Review if your office depends on a single line.
